The Old-School Strikethrough

We use Excel for all kinds of tasks. Sometimes we encounter tasks where we are required to somehow mark items as complete or mark items that cancel each other out. Although Excel provides lots of ways to do this, such as coloring the cells, deleting the cells, putting notes in adjacent cells, etc..., a old-school way is the strikethrough.

If you're not aware of Excel's strikethrough option, you're not alone. It's hiding away on the Font tab in the Format Cells dialog. It would be easier to access this if it was on the Ribbon, however the Ribbon is valuable real estate and since most Excel users do not need the strikethrough option, it's relegated to a dialog box.

If you currently use, or would like to start using the strikethrough, here are a couple of options you can try.

Option 1: To get to the Format Cells dialog press CTRL+1 then click the Font tab and you'll see the Strikethrough option on the bottom left.

Option 2: An even faster option lets you instantly apply a strikethrough without having to open the Format Cells dialog is to use the keyboard shortcut CTRL+5

Option 3: Another option is to add the Strikethrough command to your Quick Access Toolbar (QAT).

Here's how...
 
1) Right click anywhere on the Ribbon and choose Customize the Quick Access Toolbar...;

2) From the 'Choose commands from' dropdown, select All Commands;

3) Scroll down and select the Strikethrough command, then click the Add>> button, then click OK;

4) Now that the Strikethrough command is on your QAT, it's just one quick click to apply strikethrough formatting.
